About Ádám Schlégl

One of the key members of the HUNOR program is Dr. Ádám Schlégl, assistant professzor and clinical specialist at the University of Pécs Clinical Centre, Orthopaedic Clinic. The orthopedic specialist completed both his medical studies and the research required for his PhD at the University of Pécs. In recent years, he has specialized in tumor surgery and is a dedicated university lecturer. Additionally he has been practicing martial arts since early childhood—he is a second-dan black belt master in Kyokushin karate.

“Reaching space may be one of the greatest adventures, the most extraordinary experiences a human being can have. At some point, nearly every child becomes intensely fascinated with space. For many, this passion fades, but not for me—my enthusiasm has remained strong to this day. The experiments planned for the International Space Station and their scientific potential, along with the spirit of adventure they embody, serve as powerful motivation for me,” he stated in a previous interview on the Pécs Medical School’s website

Dr. Schlégl also spoke with UnivTV, where he discussed what makes someone suitable for such a unique mission to explore the unknown. He provided insight into the selection process and the rigorous challenges that astronaut candidates faced daily during training. He also emphasized the importance of a strong support system—family, friends, colleagues, and the university—without which such a monumental undertaking would not be possible.

In addition, Dr. Ádám Schlégl delivered an in-depth presentation on the program at the ceremonial opening of the 37th OTDK Medical and Health Sciences section in Pécs in 2025. His talk, titled "Hungarian life sciences return to space", begins at 59 minutes and 00 seconds in the video linked below:
